Winter sun: why your Daily Defense never goes on holiday

From the city to the ski slopes, sun protection belongs in your skincare routine in winter too. Here in Asiago we know it well: clear skies and crisp winter light make us forget how present the sun is, yet it follows us all year round. That is why we created Daily Defense.

UV rays don't hibernate. In the winter season UVB rays are weaker, but UVA rays still reach your skin and drive photo-ageing, the skin aging caused by sun exposure.

For this reason, sun protection, especially on the face (the most exposed and delicate area), should be part of everyone's daily care. We may change scenery, from the city to the mountains, but not our good habits.

The magic of snow can be misleading

In the cold we wrap up and think less about the sun. In fact, on the clearest days we are the ones looking for it. But cold does not mean your skin is safe from UV rays: by the time you feel warmth on your face, the exposure is already happening.

Snow changes things even more. Besides the radiation that reaches your skin directly, part of it is reflected by the snowy surface, increasing your exposure. How many times have we seen a skier with the sharp tan line left by the goggles?

It is one of the clearest examples of how strongly the sun makes itself felt even in freezing temperatures. That is why a day on the snow calls for the same care we give to summer days outdoors: mountain sun protection matters as much as it does at the beach.

You don't need to ski: the sun is there every day

In summer we link sun protection to the sea; in winter we link it to skiing. But think about these everyday situations:

  • a walk downtown
  • the commute to work
  • an outdoor run
  • an afternoon out with the kids
  • hours spent in the car

We live them every day without a second thought, yet in each one our skin is exposed to direct or indirect solar radiation (such as the rays coming through a car window). That is why sun protection is a daily act of care throughout the winter season: it is the one skincare step designed to counter light-induced skin aging.

Daily Defense Face Emulsion SPF50: sun protection designed for your face cream

To make sun protection a simple habit, we created Daily Defense Face Emulsion SPF50 a fluid suitable for all skin types, to be used together with your everyday face cream.

Inclusivity is what defines Daily Defense: its texture adapts to that of the face cream it is mixed with, so you never have to give up the comfort of the right cream for your skin to protect yourself from the sun.

How to apply Daily Defense Face Emulsion SPF50

  1. Place your usual amount of face cream in the palm of your hand.
  2. Add two pumps of Daily Defense Face Emulsion.
  3. Mix well and apply the blend to your face.

Sun protection is daily care, and it is the step that does more than any other to help prevent the signs of light-induced skin aging. Because the sun is there in every season, just like your skin.

FAQ

If I work in an office all day, do I still need to apply sun protection?

In general, yes, especially if your office has a lot of windows: UVA rays pass through glass and are responsible for photo-ageing. Your journey to the office counts too (car or public transport, plus the walk). In addition, Daily Defense Face Emulsion SPF50 contains phytocomplexes of Melissa Officinalis, which protect against the blue light emitted by electronic device screens.

If I apply sun protection, can I still synthesise vitamin D?

Vitamin D is synthesised through UVB rays, which sun protection only partly absorbs or reflects: no sun product protects 100% from radiation. Sunscreen therefore does not block vitamin D synthesis. A healthy, balanced diet also helps build up vitamin D reserves.

Can I use Daily Defense Face Emulsion SPF50 on its own, without mixing it with face cream?

Absolutely. It is designed to be mixed with your day cream for the best skin comfort, but if your skin is dry or dull you can also use it on its own. On its own it also makes an excellent makeup base and gives a visibly more glowing skin.

If I suffer from acne or have very oily skin, can I use it?

In general, yes, combined with a purifying face cream. In this case, however, we recommend trying our mineral face and body line (Invisible Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 or 50), ideal for skin that needs to be soothed and calmed. The mineral filter is zinc oxide: besides acting as a sun shield, it has antimicrobial and soothing properties, suited to blemish-prone and red skin. The effect is less glow and more matte.

Which step of the skincare routine does it go in?

In a complete routine, after your serum, together with your day cream (or without it) as the last step. To keep your protection going through the day, reapply every 2-3 hours, especially if you sweat or come into contact with water.

Is it suitable for sports?

Absolutely: its water resistance makes it ideal for activities involving physical effort and sweat. In this case we recommend applying it on its own, as the last step of your skincare, for maximum adhesion to the skin, and reapplying it after exercise or at least every 2-3 hours.

Can I use it at the beach too?

Certainly. In this case you can apply it on its own: it works like a traditional SPF 50 sun protection, with the added comfort of a face cream. Here too, reapply every 2-3 hours.

Which sun protection should I choose for sensitive skin?

If your skin is sensitive, reactive or prone to redness, the right sun protection is the one you are happy to use every day, because consistency matters most. Here are some practical tips:

  • Choose a product tested on sensitive skin: our whole Invisible Mineral Sunscreen line is tested on sensitive skin and suitable for daily use on both face and body. Zinc oxide, besides acting as a sun shield, has soothing and antimicrobial properties.
  • Introduce the product gradually. If your skin is very reactive, start with a small area. If in doubt, or if you have a diagnosed skin condition, ask your dermatologist.
  • Reapply every 2-3 hours when you are outdoors, especially if you sweat or come into contact with water.
